Cove Fort

On the way home from a recent trip we spotted a little sign pointing to a place called Cove Fort.  Between a love for historic sites and a desire to get out of the car for a while, we stopped to see what was there.  We were surprised at how nicely it had been restored and were given a tour.

The living quarters of the folks who lived in and ran the fort were on one side of the inside walls of the structure.

This beautiful coverlet was on one of the beds.  We were told it was woven of a mixture of linen and wool which created the beautiful pattern when it was dyed.

This amazing bed can be turned upside down and used for a bench!

The walls surrounding the fort kept it safe from attack.

Fences surrounding the corrals were held together with strips of dried rawhide.  The posts looked rather rickety, but were very solidly in the ground.

The office in the fort even had a little telegraph station.

Here you can see the front of the fort from the inside.

It was a stop worth making.  I would be happy to stop there again when we are in the area.

Pioneer Life 2015

It is always fun to take a trip back to a slower paced time when we volunteer at the pioneer site at the American West Heritage Center.  Life is still busy, but in a different way than modern times.

Work on a 'new' old cabin has begun.  This cabin was recently found within the walls of a home that was being remodeled or torn down for some reason.  It is more than a hundred years old.  We hope when renovations of the cabin are complete, it will give us a bit more space!

Visitors who stop by during the day often take the time to make themselves a little rag doll.

On Wednesday afternoons when lunch is over, it is time to sit in the shade and work on some projects. Bobbin lace is a popular activity.

 Embroidery projects also are fun

I am not sure it is fun working with a drawknife, but sometimes it is necessary.

The dugout is surrounded by blue flax flowers.

A few fiddle tunes liven things up while we are working.  It is nice to be able to cook outside in our outdoor kitchen where we have more space and more light.

Even the little loom was set up and in use.  Altogether a busy and productive afternoon.
