Our own tree at last

Soon after our first Christmas we moved to Alaska which was somewhat of a culture shock for me. In September we had our first child, then in December we moved into our first house. One of the first orders of business for a new house in December is clearly to find a Christmas tree. I was quickly told that there would be no buying of Christmas trees as trees are plentiful in Alaska, so off we went to search out the perfect tree. I felt that our particular part of Alaska was pretty deficient when it came to perfect trees. There were quite a few black spruce trees around, but due to growing conditions, they often seem to lack in symmetry and number of branches. Usually that meant taking the tree home, then artfully placing it with the flat side with few branches to the back. Nonetheless, we had a tree of our own.

We had nothing to decorate the tree with; and really, with a new baby and a new house, we didn't have many spare funds either, so we headed down to Pay 'n' Save to see what we could find. Our budget stretched to a couple of strands of lights and 4 boxes of ornaments...12 to a box. Three of the boxes were plain balls in three colors at 99¢ a box. The last box was the big splurge! For $1.19, we got a box of fancy balls. After all these years, only 3 of the fancy balls have survived.

Copious amounts of 'icicles' filled in all the bare spots to complete our holiday look on that 2nd Christmas.
